“Alpha Rizen?” Allison knocks on my study door. I accidentally prick my finger with a needle.
“Ouch,” I shake my hand out.
“Are you okay?” she rushes over.
“I’m fine. Just a little prick. It happens all the time. What’s up?” I ask her, setting my things down.
“I wanted to talk to you,” she says, holding up the folder I gave her a couple of days ago.
A part of me wants her to say no. I’ve kind of grown attached to her since coming here, and I love when she tells me stories about who she thought my mom had been when she lived here. It’s her reality and she’s gone out of her way to try and make me feel welcomed.
“You made a decision,” I say, getting up. I motion her over to my desk.
“I have,” she nods. She places the binder on my desk. “I want to thank you for this opportunity, and I accept. I just-” she shrugs. “I didn’t mean to disagree with you the way I did in front of everyone. I know I upset you, and that’s why you lashed out.”
“It was on me, too. I let you get away with whatever you wanted because this is your pack. I was trying to learn as much as I could from you, you to think I was just going to go along with what you wanted.

“That’s not what I intended. I feel like we were on the same page for so long that I didn’t stop to think about the consequences. I’m sorry for that and for embarrassing you in front of everyone.”
“I know you offered me this job to get me out of the way.” She clears her throat. “You’re not the only one who hates that I want things to stay the way they were with the former alpha. I hear them talking. I’m a relic.”
“Look, I know the changes are going to be hard on you. On a lot of the elders here, but things are changing fast. I’m not just your alpha. I have more responsibilities, and I have a lot to look out for.
“You asked me to do this, and I know you have certain expectations, but if I do this with all these traditions and outdated laws, it’s going to drive me
insane because a lot of this doesn’t make sense to me.
“I’m an outsider, and I am going to have my own opinion. You can’t just do what you did when you disagree with me. We have to talk about this. And I’m not the only one that you disrespected. Just because you’re in charge doesn’t give you the right to belittle others.
“Ren has been backing you up from the start, and I know you made her run drills on top of making her pick up an extra shift with patrols. I am going to have to punish you for that. I am going to pay her the overtime she earned, and it will come out of your pay. That was a mistake on your behalf.”
“I understand,” she sighs.
“Good. Don’t let it happen again. Thank you for agreeing to represent us in court. It’s not going to be an easy transition, and I want to ensure that this process goes as smoothly as possible. I was just informed that Alpha Rizen didn’t like the elders‘ opinions and that he didn’t have anyone representing
him.
“Alpha Wolfe has agreed to send a couple of his representatives to help train you and get everything we need. This way you’re not walking in there blind. I am new to this, and I would appreciate your help in re–establishing the elder council here.
“I know we won’t always agree, but I do want to have options beyond what I’m familiar with. My mate’s parents go to is fire them or murder. It’s kind of funny.”
“Uh, murder is not funny,” she smiles. “And thank you for asking Alpha Wolfe for his assistance. We are going to need all the help we can get. Are you sure you want the elders to get involved in pack affairs? They would get a vote in what happens with all major changes.”
“Right, and as alpha, I also have the right to tell them to shut the hell up,” I nod.

“I am not even a little bit worried about you being here,” she laughs, shaking her head..
“I’m worried,” I admit.
“You don’t seem worried. From the start, you’ve always seemed determined. I know it was unfair to ask and that it was a lot for you to take on she reaches over the desk to place her hand over mine.
“Run! Phoebe! Run,” she screams. I blink my eyes rapidly and look up to see the packhouse on fire. “You have to go! Run!”
I look down to see that my belly is huge. I pull away and almost fall out of my giant study chair.
“Phoebe!” someone calls out to me as my ears begin to ring. “Rogue King! Something’s wrong with the Alpha!”
“Phoebe, what’s wrong?”
Someone grabs my arm, and the room spins. Suddenly, I’m standing in front of the packhouse while it’s burning. Up ahead, standing at the entrance is a woman. She’s looking back at me as if she can see me.
“I wasn’t sure this would work,” her voice echoes around me.
It’s her. The woman in the painting is behind my desk. Eliza Rizen. My mother. I look around to see that there are bodies littered everywhere.
“What did you do?” I growl.
“I’ve been pushing against your defenses for years,” she smiles, coming down the front steps. “You are one strong–minded woman. I suppose you have your father to thank for that. I think the only reason I was finally able to break through is because this was also one of my biggest fears.”
“Is this vision? Something that’s going to happen?”
“No, that’s not what our affinity is.” She finally stops in front of me. “As silverbacks, we steal memories. It’ll be useful as a Queen of Court. Learn to use it, and no one will ever be able to hide a single thing from you. Not unless they’ve built defenses. It’s rare.”
“What is this?”
“I’ve been told you were raised as a mortal. I believe they call this limbo. The in between. We have a very special connection to each other because of what we are. So do the twins and the rest of your siblings. We’re all connected by what we are.”
“Why?”
“Excuse me?”
“Why did you leave me? Us. Mel is a baby. Derek was raised by a fucking tool. What could be so important that you would treat us like objects?”
“It’s not something I can say. I did it to protect you.”
“Protect us? I could have died at the hands of that cat bitch,” I growl. “You’re our mother.”
“There is something much worse than what you’ve experienced out there. Forces you know nothing about. Your half sister has barely scratched the surface of the truth. I have to go for now. I’m glad we finally have something in common. I want you to know that you’ve made me very proud, Phoebe. I could not have asked for better.”
I growl, feeling the ache in my chest flare. I swing/My claws cut through her, and she goes up in smoke. Everything around me spins as I try to catch my breath. I close my eyes tightly, and when I open them again, I’m on all fours. I look down at my hands, and my claws are out. There’s blood on them.
“Phoebe?”
I look up to see Mr. Knightly standing in front of me. He’s bleeding.
“Oh, my god, Arnold,” I scramble to get to my feet.

“I’m okay. I’m okay,” he steadies me. “It’s just a scratch. Are you okay? You with us?”
I look around to see Jason and Allison standing behind ‘me looking startled. How did I get from behind my desk to coffee table?
“What happened?” Task.
“I was hoping you’d be able to tell us,” he laughs. “Let’s take a seat. Beta Allison can you please get her doctor up here?”
