“Ms. Anderson, are you sure about changing your name? It’s a real hassle–you’ll have to update everything: your diploma, driver’s license, passport, everything.”
Clara nodded. “Yes”
The clerk asked again,“Are you sure you wouldn’t care to think about it? It’s a pretty long and arduous process for adults to change their names, and ““Clara Anderson” is a pretty name.”
Clara signed the paperwork. Thanks.”

That was her plan for the future.
She needed to get out of here, completely.
“Can I get my passport changed now!”
“Sure. Here is your receipt for the change of name. Take this downstairs to the passport window.”
Clara got her passport updated lightning–fast. But the rest- her college diploma, birth certificate she left untouched.
She was leaving in a week with her new passport. Her old identity could stay put, she didn’t need it anymore.
