Chapter 1
For fifteen years as Vampire Lord Zephyr Blackthorne’s pampered mate, we’d never had kids.
There’s a curse on his bloodline–every firstborn turns into a savage, mindless vampire at age one, no exception. And he couldn’t bear putting our child through that.
But on our sixteenth anniversary, Zephyr suddenly became obsessed, taking me thirteen times that night, begging me to give him an heir.
I was over the moon, throwing myself into trying to conceive. Even after losing seven pregnancies in three months, I never gave up hope.
Finally, the eighth one stuck.
However, at five months, I accidentally overheard him talking to some human girl:
“Zephyr, thank you for making Isadora lose those seven babies just to fulfill my wish for her to carry a girl.”
“Sweet little pet, you invoked your mate claim on me. Of course I’ll do whatever you want.”
“But I’m freaking out. I’m eight months along now. What if our baby comes first and gets cursed instead?”
Zephyr was silent for a long moment, then stroked her hair.
“Don’t worry. I’ve prepared the labor–inducing drugs. Isadora’s child definitely will be born before yours.”
That’s when it hit me-
My baby was just a sacrificial lamb for his real lover’s child.
I stumbled backward, clutching my stomach as I fled the manor.
Just as I reached the gates, Zephyr’s voice stopped me cold.
“You heard everything, didn’t you?”
His expression was eerily calm, showing no embarrassment at being discovered.
Meeting my tear–filled gaze, he already knew.
“Since you know the truth, just help her.”
“She’s human. Fragile. Can’t handle stress.”
A bitter laugh escaped my lips.
She was human, but what was I?
I’d given up my humanity, abandoned my coven, and embraced the darkness to be with him.
Now I couldn’t compete with a simple “she’s human.”
After a long silence, Zephyr reached out to comfort me, his fingers barely brushing my hair.
I instinctively stepped back, avoiding his touch.
There weren’t many things that made him this gentle, and every single one was non–negotiable.
The last time I defied him, I’d been thrown into the feral vampire pit for three days and nights.
Sharp fangs, putrid saliva, writhing bodies–I still had nightmares.
Taking a shaky breath, I forced myself to meet his eyes.
“Can we wait just one more month? A five–month baby, even if it survives birth, will-”

Chapter 1
“Isadora.” His cold voice cut me off. “As long as it draws breath when it’s born, that’s all that matters. You know this.”
“Be good. After this is over, I’ll give you another child. A healthy one.”
I closed my eyes in despair, and behind him, the human girl burst into tears.
“Zephyr, am I making things difficult for you?”
“Maybe I should just die with my baby instead. If our child is born a monster anyway, we might as well end it now!”
She sobbed dramatically, her delicate shoulders shaking, tears clinging to her lashes like crystal drops.
Zephyr’s eyes flashed red with protective fury.
He rarely showed such raw emotion. Usually his cold composure made me tease him about being an ancient statue.
Even when I’d once nearly been drained by feral vampires, he’d only frowned slightly.
Then calmly ordered the healers to tend my wounds.
Now I knew the truth. Zephyr wasn’t emotionless.
I just wasn’t worth his emotions.
When I looked up to meet his ice–cold stare, my breath caught.
His servants appeared behind me, roughly grabbing my arms.
