Chapter 23
During the day, Camilla had visited the room that Lucius and Cecilia. shared. The children’s bedroom was a suite, containing two beds, one at princess bed for Cecilia, and two separate bathrooms.
,
Cecilia immediately ran upstairs. Camilla stood at the entrance to the staircase, and to avoid her as much as possible, Cecilia deliberately took a roundabout way up from the other side.
Lucius, on the other hand, walked past Camilla with his hands in hist pockets, glancing up at her briefly. But neither of the children made any move to get close to her.
Camilla felt a pang of hurt.
Charles moved closer to her and whispered, “Don’t be too eager. The most important thing for you now is to recover your health.”
Camilla realized that Charles thought she had been too eager to please the children just now. Naturally, she didn’t argue.
Charles continued to comfort her. “It’s normal for Lucius and Cecilia not to be close to you. After all, they lost their mother the moment they were born. Take it slow and give them some time.”
Listening to these excuses, Camilla felt so disgusted she wanted to vomit.
Others might not know, but Charles was more aware than anyone that her poor health, which had led to her becoming a vegetable after a difficult childbirth, was entirely because of him.
In those years, in order to help Charles secure his position as general manager, she had worked tirelessly in the research institute, developing

new drugs and exposing herself to a large number of chemical substances.
Her physical condition had deteriorated rapidly. She had once had nosebleeds and fainted from a high fever, only to wake up in a hospital
room.
Charles had stayed by her bedside, pretending to be gentle and caring, but he had deliberately let her overhear him being questioned by his father about when the new drug would be developed.
Camilla still remembered vividly how Charles had sat by her hospital bed, holding her hand tightly, his eyes red and his expression haggard and full of deep affection.
He had said, “Camilla, it doesn’t matter if I lose my position as general manager. I can’t bear to see you work so hard for me anymore.”
At the time, she had been completely moved, thinking she had married the best man in the world.
But now, Camilla realized that if Charles had truly cared even a little about her health, he could have kept her in the hospital.
She had been so weak that she could barely get out of bed. If Charles hadn’t given the go–ahead, she wouldn’t have been able to leave.
The true measure of someone’s love wasn’t in their words, but in their actions. So, what had Charles done?
The moment she had expressed her desire to be discharged, he had immediately arranged for it. The next day, he had sent her right back to the research institute.
Charles knew her all too well and was acutely aware of just how much she loved him. A single frown from him, and she would have given him the world. He had used her feelings for him, drained her completely, and

secured his position.
A chill spread from Camilla’s heart, creeping through her entire body. ‘Charles, you’re so ruthless,‘ she thought to herself.
Camilla tilted her face upward and smiled at the man in front of her. “You’re right. I was too eager. I should listen to you and take it slow.”
Her compliance clearly pleased Charles, who patted her head contentedly. “Go back to your room and rest. I’ll be there later.”
JOkay,” Camilla replied, gripping her white cane and turning to head upstairs.
As soon as she was out of Charles’s sight, the smile on her lips vanished. Camilla quickened her pace, heading toward the children’s room.
