Chapter 8
Adrian was severely injured.

I spent a fortune bringing in top doctors from both domestic and international medical centers. After doing everything possible to save him, he barely survived.
Adrian was conscious and could speak with difficulty. Other than that, he was completely paralyzed.
Phantom limb pain tormented him day and night, and his agonized screams echoed through the hospital room almost twenty–four hours a day.
To avoid disturbing other patients, I paid to rent out an entire floor of the hospital and arranged for security personnel to protect him around the clock.
I took some time to rest, then had professional psychologists conduct evaluations to confirm I wasn’t suffering from any
stress reactions.
After pulling myself together, I went to the hospital to see Adrian.
The pain had left him utterly haggard.
When he saw me, tears immediately streamed down his face. “Harper, please call Lillian for me. I want to see her. Please, I’m

begging you to let me see her.”
I looked at him without saying a word.

Adrian flew into a rage, cursing me frantically and hurling insults at me in various languages.

Right in front of him, I called Lillian and asked her to come to the hospital.
Lillian agreed.
After I hung up, Adrian’s spirits visibly lifted.
Though he couldn’t move his body, he kept glancing toward the door.
I pulled up a chair and sat down to wait quietly with him for Lillian.
We didn’t have to wait long. Half an hour later, Lillian pushed open the hospital room door.
Tears rolled down Adrian’s cheeks. He couldn’t form a complete sentence, only kept repeating: “Lillian, Lillian, Lillian…”
Lillian stood with her hands in her pockets, three feet away from the hospital bed, making no move to come closer.
Adrian struggled to speak: “Lillian, could you come a little

closer? Let me see you, please?”

Lillian smiled and said: “Adrian, I only came here to see your miserable state with my own eyes. You’re incredibly resilient. Your car was completely destroyed, but somehow you survived.”
Adrian was utterly shocked.
His lips trembled violently, unable to utter a single word.
The look in his eyes as he stared at Lillian was filled with despair.
continued: “Loving you was the biggest mistake of
- fe. To force me to leave you, Ryan had someone kill my parents. How stupid would I have to be to still love you?”
Then tears began falling from Lillian’s eyes.
She went on: “Ryan was lucky–he died early. I came to see your pathetic condition on behalf of my parents. This way, they should be able to rest in peace in heaven.”
Lillian walked to the doorway, then turned back and said:
“Adrian, Harper was once the person who loved you most in this world. But you lost her too.”
