“How is this possible?” Asher shook his head in disbelief: “You’re lying to me, right? Didn’t
you say your parents were just migrant farmers?!”
I looked at the backyard full of vegetables my parents had planted,
Hmm, how does that not count~
“And those company orders…”
I nodded: “They’re all from my connections.”
“Master Lin?”
I laughed: “Did you think your couple of brushes would get my teacher’s attention? Don’t kid yourself, you’re just a painter without talent or effort.”
Asher was frozen in place.
My parents finished their speech and invited Declan and me onstage to give ours.
As Declan and I brushed past Asher, I reminded him: “Asher, I don’t need to be
materialistic.”
“I am the value itself.”
Adeline was also frozen but still angrily defended Asher: “Nora, what are you bragging about? Do you think it’s okay to move on so quickly?”
“Well, that’s better than being a perpetual backup, isn’t it~”
Ignoring them, Declan and I walked hand in hand onto the stage.
The screen behind us showed our wedding photos, which were quite cheesy,
But that was the result of Declan’s insistence.
We thanked everyone for coming, nearing the end of our speech,

When Asher’s shout came from the crowd: “Nora! I was wrong!”
He pushed through the crowd, rushing towards the stage: “I really know I was wrong, I’ll
change! We’ve been together for so long, how can you just leave me? What about our
career, our home, are you giving up on them too?”
His eyes were watery, perhaps with some real emotion, but mostly insincerity.
I paid no attention to them and walked onto the stage holding Declan’s hand. The screen
behind us transitioned to our wedding photo.
It was a bit over–the–top, but Declan was adamant about it. We expressed our gratitude to
everyone for attending, and just as we were concluding our speeches, Asher’s voice rang
out from the crowd, “Nora! I was wrong!” He pushed through the people, running towards
the stage.
“I truly realize my mistake, and I’ll change! We’ve been together for so long. How can you just decide you don’t want me anymore? And what about our careers and our home? Are you really giving all that up?”
There were tears in his eyes, perhaps a hint of genuine emotion, but mostly it was deceit. His words were simply a ploy to keep me tied to him.
Even if we have no future together, people will always refer to Asher as the ex–boyfriend
of the Zhou family’s daughter, which would ensure he remains in the limelight. Quite the
calculated move.
I looked at him with disdain as his clothes were disheveled from his frantic dash. I
signaled for security to remove him. I also declared that the Zhou family would have no dealings with him, effectively ensuring that everyone at the banquet today wouldn’t
collaborate with Asher.
As the banquet concluded and Declan and I were about to leave, Asher was still lingering
at the entrance. Seeing me, he attempted his old routine, but this time, the audience was
much smaller.
I had run out of patience. “Asher, you really know how to adapt to the times.”
