Chapter 86 I Never Said I Refused the Divorce
Chandler’s father felt the same way, but he wasn’t the type
to say everything out loud–especially since Ginny was still, technically, part of their family.
“All right, enough,” he muttered, not wanting to stir the pot any further.
With the old man already in the car, they couldn’t exactly drag him back out, so Chandler’s parents quickly climbed into the vehicle behind him.
“Grandpa, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for you to worry.”
In the car, Ginny turned toward Josh, guilt weighing on her face. She had come today to bring him joy. Instead, everything had fallen apart.
If she’d known things would turn out like this, she wouldn’t have
come.
Sure, he’d be disappointed, but at least he would’ve had a peaceful birthday. At least the Pierce family, the Wheeler family, and all the guests would have left happy. But now…
“Did you really push Melody?” Josh asked, his expression
serious.”

Ginny instinctively shook her head. He saw her response and smiled.
“Well then, there you have it. If you didn’t do it, that just means someone else didn’t want me to enjoy my birthday. So why should I be mad at you?
“You’re still part of this family. As long as you haven’t divorced Chandler, you’re my granddaughter–in–law. You know how protective I am of my own. I’d never just sit back and let someone bully you.”
So that’s why he insisted on going to the hospital—he had come to stand up for her.
That realization flooded her with a quiet warmth, softening the
bitterness that had started to rise inside her.
“How’s Melody doing?” the old man asked as Ginny helped him into the hospital, following behind Chandler’s parents.
The Wheeler family was already gathered outside the ER.
They saw the Pierce family approaching, but no one greeted
them.
Chandler’s mother felt the awkwardness hanging thick in the air and glanced at Chandler.
“She’s still being treated,” Chandler answered, his eyes flicking

toward Ginny. Then his brow furrowed. “Mom, why’d you bring her here? And Grandpa too? It’s late—he should be resting.”
Chandler’s mother gave a strained smile. She had wanted both of them to stay home, but clearly, no one had been in the mood to listen.
Before she could explain, Josh spoke up, “What happened
today happened during my birthday celebration. The one being accused is my granddaughter–in–law. Reason alone says I should be here.”
Chandler caught the note of defense in his grandfather’s tone and frowned.
“Grandpa, how can you still take her side at a time like this? Maybe if you hadn’t defended her so much, she wouldn’t have dared to do something so cruel.”
Ginny stared at him in disbelief.
She had always known he didn’t love her. But she never realized -until now–how monstrous he truly thought she was.
Fueled by anger, she opened her mouth to speak, but the old man beat her to it.
“You brat, what nonsense are you spouting? You know what kind of person Ginny is. She would never hurt anyone. There’s definitely been a misunderstanding here.”

“My daughter is lying in there, maybe dying, and you’re still defending your granddaughter–in–law?” Mrs. Wheeler shrieked, her voice cracking with rage.
Melody’s father and his three sons rushed to hold her back, their faces all twisted with anger. They glared daggers at Ginny.
“If our sister pulls through,” one of them growled, “we’re going to file charges. Expect a lawsuit.”
Up until now, no matter how the Wheeler family accused or insulted her, Ginny hadn’t defended herself. But now, she was done staying quiet.
“Go ahead. I’ll see it through to the end,” she said calmly. “You can fake a surgery, fake a miscarriage–even fake a pregnancy. But a lie is still a lie. All it takes is a qualified doctor, and the truth will come out.”
She looked directly at Mrs. Wheeler as she spoke.
Back at the house, there had been a moment–brief, but telling –when Melody almost slipped. It was Mrs. Wheeler who had jumped in to smooth things over.
At the time, Ginny hadn’t been sure what to think. But just now, the change in Mrs. Wheeler’s expression confirmed her suspicion.

“You’ve already done enough to my sister, and now you’re
trying to slander her?” Jake snapped, his face tightening in fury. “You’re absolutely heartless.”
Even Mr. Wheeler, who had remained quiet until now, could no longer hold back.
“If you didn’t want a divorce, you could’ve just said so. We could have all sat down together and worked something out. But instead, you resorted to hurting people just to get your way? Deliberate injury is a crime, you know.”
Ginny laughed coldly, turning her gaze toward Mr. Wheeler.
“I never said I didn’t want a divorce. In fact, the moment I found out about Chandler and Melody, I told Chandler I wanted one. The only reason we’re still legally married is because he won’t sign the papers. If you don’t believe me, ask him yourself.”
