Chapter 43 She Requested a Divorce
Josh didn’t say a single word the entire way back to the Pierce estate. His face was as dark as the bottom of a burnt pot. Even when his wife tried to talk to him, he ignored her.
Chandler’s father and mother had been hoping to speak a few words in defense of Chandler before he got back, but from the look of things now, it was pointless.
Thirty minutes later, Chandler and Ginny ran into each other at the front gate.
Chandler instinctively wanted to explain, but when he thought about Ginny walking out on him at the bar, the words got stuck in his throat. He swallowed them.
“Let’s go in.”
After what happened last night, Ginny felt calmer seeing Chandler again.
Now, looking at him, she didn’t expect anything–not even an explanation.
When you don’t expect anything, you don’t get disappointed.
“Dad, Mom. Grandpa, Grandma.” The two of them greeted the elders politely.

Josh waved Ginny over to sit beside him and his wife, but told Chandler to remain standing.
Chandler’s mom, Jessie Reinhart, tried to speak up for her son, but Josh cut her off.
“Too much coddling ruins a boy. He turned out like this because of the way you raised him. The Pierce family’s reputation has been dragged through the mud by him.”
The more he talked, the angrier he became. But with Ginny present, there were things he couldn’t say aloud.
Still, worried she’d feel upset over what had happened, he did his best to reassure her.
“Ginny, don’t worry. Grandma and I are on your side, always. If this brat’s done anything to upset you, just tell us. We’ll make things right for you. Has he explained anything yet? If not, I’ll ask him for you.”
Ginny could see how much the old man was trying to protect her.
Once, that might’ve made her happy. She used to think that having someone in the middle trying to smooth things over could help her and Chandler connect–help him understand her, maybe even accept her.
But after everything she’d been through lately, she didn’t care

anymore.
She didn’t even care about Chandler.
So what happened last night? It no longer mattered.
“Grandpa, you just got back. You shouldn’t get angry–it’s not good for your health.”
She had the housekeeper bring over the blood pressure monitor. Sure enough, his pressure was high. The housekeeper rushed to fetch his medication.
Chandler had been raised by his grandparents. He cared deeply for them. Seeing his grandfather’s blood pressure spike because of him, he felt anxious and guilty.
Before the old man could press him further, Chandler spoke.
“Nothing happened between me and Melody. Really.
“Ginny knows this too. Melody got drunk, I went to check on her, then drove her to the hospital.”
“As for the photo, someone must’ve taken it at a tricky angle while I was buckling her seatbelt. That’s why it looked like we were kissing.
“But I swear, there’s nothing between us. Grandpa, you raised me. You know I wouldn’t lie to you.”

Chandler had never lied to his grandparents, except about the marriage.
Ginny believed him–on some level, she did. But with the way things were between them now, even if it wasn’t true this time, it was just a matter of time. Something else would happen.
Deborah Keller, hearing her grandson’s explanation, jumped in to support him.
“You always say the boy takes after you. Now he’s told you everything–what do you think? Do you believe him?”
The old man didn’t answer her directly. He turned to Ginny.
“Ginny, do you believe him?”
His stance was clear–he was on her side. If Ginny chose to forgive Chandler, he would let the matter drop.
Everyone in the room understood the old man’s meaning. All eyes turned to Ginny.
She had been part of this family for five years. And for the first time, she felt like she mattered.
Her in–laws weren’t bad to her, but they weren’t warm either. They were always polite and distant. So polite she never quite fit in.

She used to think it was her fault–her personality, her presence. But now she understood it was because Chandler didn’t care for her. So naturally, his parents wouldn’t either.
If this had been the old her, she would’ve immediately said she believed Chandler. She would’ve spoken up for him in front of
Josh.
But this time…
“I believe him,” she said, calm as still water.
Everyone in the room breathed a quiet sigh of relief. They were already thinking about lunch.
But Ginny wasn’t finished.
“Grandpa,” she said. “I want to divorce Chandler.”
“What did you just say?”
The old man thought he must’ve misheard. But when he saw the unwavering look in her eyes, his expression darkened.
“Ginny, will you stop with your nonsense already?” Chandler snapped. “You made a scene with me, fine. But now you’re dragging Grandpa and Grandma into this too?”
He still didn’t believe she actually wanted a divorce. He thought

she was just retaliating for what happened at the bar.
He figured she was upset, throwing a fit.

He didn’t mind if she got emotional now and then. But this? This was not the time.
Their grandparents were old. Dragging this out in front of them -he wasn’t okay with that.
“If you have something to say, say it later. Dad, Mom, and Grandpa and Grandma just got back from overseas. Let’s eat first, alright?”
He shot her a look, hoping she’d get the message.
But Ginny ignored him completely.
“Grandpa, I’m serious.”
