The General’s Regret

Chapter 68 Explained to Professor Edward
Melody nodded sweetly and held onto Chandler’s arm as they headed back. After a few steps, she glanced over her shoulder toward the subway entrance. Seeing no sign of Ginny, she let out a quiet sigh of relief.
Whether Ginny knew the truth or not, it didn’t matter. What mattered was getting rid of the “baby“-and Ginny–before anything else happened.
At four in the afternoon, Ginny walked out of Riston Private Hospital and called Professor Hardy. Partly to share the good news, partly to thank him.
“I told you,” Professor Hardy said, voice filled with pride. “With your skills, they’d be fools not to hire you. If other hospitals passed you up, that’s their loss. Now that you’ve secured a job, I can breathe easier.”
“Focus on your work. As for what’s going on at home…” Professor Hardy rarely got involved in his students‘ personal lives, but this time, he couldn’t help but offer a word of advice. “People and things that aren’t meant to stay–cut them off clean. It’s not about right or wrong. Folks just want something to talk about.
“But you’re the one who has to live your life. So live it in a way that makes you happy. Everything else is just noise.”

After hanging up, Ginny looked up at the sky and drew in a long breath, then turned and stepped into the subway station.
Yeah. No matter what the future holds, she had to live well now. That was the only way to shut up those waiting for her to fall- and reassure the ones who truly cared.
“Ginny,” Ryan said later, “I found out why Professor Edward kicked you out of the lab. Someone told him things–twisted half–truths.
“Professor Edward doesn’t know how complicated things really are. He just saw the rumors and thought maybe… maybe you were really the problem. That’s why he chose to let you go. For the sake of the lab.
“Oh—and he brought the lab back to America. There’s a project in this city, so he might be here a while. If you’re still thinking about fighting for this, now’s your chance.”
At first, Ginny’s eyes lit up. But then she remembered all the underhanded tactics the Wheelers had used. Her heart sank
again.
Whoever poisoned Professor Edward’s impression of her—it was definitely someone acting on the Wheeler family’s behalf.
As long as they hadn’t achieved their goal, they wouldn’t stop. Not with her, and not with anyone connected to her.

Professor Edward had finally escaped her mess. She had no right to drag him back in before her own issues were dealt with.
“But are you really okay with that?” Ryan pressed. “You’ve waited years for this opportunity. You carned your way into his lab on merit alone. And now, because of a few lies, you’re going to give it all up? Just like that?
“The Ginny I know wouldn’t let fate win so easily. I remember when we were kids–someone bullied you. You couldn’t win that fight. But you still threw everything you had into it. Just to make sure they never tried again.
“So what about now, Ginny? You back down once, you think the Wheeler family’s gonna thank you? They’ll just take it as proof you were scared. Then mock you for it.”
Ginny pictured the scene and felt her stomach twist.
Yeah. Why should she sacrifice her future and her dreams because of someone else’s lies?
If she kept backing down, waiting for things to resolve on their own, how long would she keep retreating? How far?
Even if that day finally came, would Professor Edward’s lab still be hiring?
The future was uncertain. But the present was something she

“Thank you,” she said quietly. “I’ve made up my mind. I’ll talk to Professor Edward tomorrow morning.”
Ryan had already found out where the professor was staying. At dawn, Ginny waited at the hotel entrance. When she saw Professor Edward appear, she rushed over.
“Ginny?” His brows lifted in surprise. But there was no anger in
his face.
Ginny exhaled, her shoulders lowering slightly.
She’d been telling herself this visit was just to speak her truth. That no matter how Professor Edward reacted, she had to clear the air. But until she saw him, she hadn’t known how nervous she really was.
After weeks of being judged and whispered about, her self–confidence had taken a hit. What if he didn’t believe her? What if he was still furious?
But now, seeing his calm expression, she finally relaxed.
“I’d like a few minutes of your time,” she said. “It’s about those rumors you heard about me.”
She glanced at her watch, then at his car. “I don’t want to make you late for the lab. I can explain on the way.”

Professor Edward saw she had already thought it all through. He gave her a slight nod.
In the car, she played him a recording. Then told him what the Wheelers had done.
He hadn’t expected things to be this complicated. His face darkened–not just with anger, but also guilt.
“This was my mistake,” he admitted. “After hearing what others said, I should have come to you directly. I shouldn’t have judged your character without speaking to you first.”
