Chapter 60 Confrontation

Lucky Draw

He had said all that just to get her to agree to a divorce with Chandler. But now, the one refusing to sign the papers wasn’t herit was Chandler

She had already told them this. Why wouldn’t they believe her

Was it simply because she had no family, no one to back her up, that they felt so entitled to bully her without restraint

Suppressing the fury rising in her chest, Ginny snapped, her voice sharp and cold. The Wheeler family’s supposed to be one of the most respectable names around here. Funny how that same family is turning a blind eye to the fact that your precious little sister is the one wrecking someone else’s marriage.”

Your family values, she scoffed, really are something else.”

You’re full of it,Kevin shot back. Melody knew Chandler first. He liked her first. If she hadn’t gone abroad, if Chandler’s grandpa hadn’t gotten so sick, Melody would’ve married Chandler

You just got lucky. You filled in for her while she was gone. Nothing more than a standin. And now that she’s back, you need to step aside.

Maybe what he has with her is justa game.”

Shut your mouth,Kevin barked. Don’t you dare compare my sister to youan orphan with nothing. Just wait. Chandler will come to you with divorce papers soon enough.”

With that, he stormed off, slamming the car door behind him as he sped away

Ginny watched him go. Then she turned and headed back to her hotel. On the way, her phone rangit was Ryan

He must’ve just gotten out of a meeting; she could hear the background noise. But it faded quickly

Ginny, why did you say that earlier? His voice held a hint of urgency. Did someone say something to you?”

She heard the worry and immediately shook her head, though he couldn’t see it. No. I was just thinking about you, that’s all

But seriously, Ryan, I meant what I said. This is my problem. You’ve helped me a lot already. I want to deal with the rest on my own.”

You’re only two years older than me. You shouldn’t be the one carrying all my burdens

You should have your own life, your own priorities. It’s not fair for

you to always be taking care of me. And II can’t help

feeling guilty about that.”

She stood at the crosswalk, waiting for the light to change, waiting for his reply

There was a long pause on the other end before Ryan finally spoke, his voice low and resolute

If you’re going to call me a friendthen I’m going to take care of you.”

But-she started, only for him to cut her off

Enough. We’ll talk about this later. I actually called because I got a photo. If you have time, come by my office.”

She was about to ask him to just send it over, but the line went dead

Not wanting to delay him any more than necessary, she hailed a cab straight to his company

Ryan had already asked his assistant to meet her out front. The moment she stepped out of the car, the assistant greeted her

Dr. Jenkins, our main entrance is under renovation. Let’s head in through the back,”

Ginny glanced at the front of the buildingsure enough

workers were busy at the entrance. She nodded and followed the

assistant around to the back, then took the elevator straight to the top floor

Ryan was still in a meeting with the sales team. The assistant led her to his office and told her to wait

Ten minutes later, the meeting wrapped up. He walked into the office to find her reading a medical paper

You’ve still got the focus to work on your thesis? Looks like the other night didn’t leave much of a mark.”

She smiled faintly. Everyone faces rough patches. But if we stop moving forward just because something went wrong, how are we supposed to live

I don’t have anyone to lean on. So I keep telling myself—

tomorrow has to be worth it. Better to look ahead than dwell on what I can’t change. You used to tell me the same thing, didn’t you?”

Ryan had said those exact words before, back when he’d been trying to convince her to let go of her feelings for Chandler

But she hadn’t listened

And now, five years later, she’d ended up exactly where he’d hoped she never would
