The General’s Regret
Chapter 44 Dispute
Lucky Draw
Chandler hadn’t expected Ginny to be this stubborn. What was she really trying to do?
“Ginny, that’s enough. Are you really only at peace when the whole family is in chaos?” His voice edged toward frustration. “You’re mad because I embarrassed you at the bar last night, right? Fine, I’m sorry. There, I said it.”
Josh picked up on something off in his tone. “What bar?” he asked. “What happened last night?”
Ginny didn’t want to go into it again. But Chandler had brought it up, and now that his grandfather was asking, he couldn’t exactly avoid it. So he gritted his teeth and laid out what had happened.
The old man was no fool. He’d been through war, stared down criminals of every kind. As soon as Chandler finished, the old man narrowed his eyes, and without a word, picked up the teacup beside him and hurled it at his grandson.
“You trusted an outsider over your own wife? Is that how I raised you? I wasn’t even there and I can already tell what really went on last night, and you still think this was Ginny’s fault? You might as well be blind if that’s how you see things.”
Grandmother frowned deeply. “That Melody girl doesn’t seem like a good influence. You should stay away from her from now

on.”
“She was drunk, Grandma. She didn’t know what she was doing.”

“Melody this, Melody that–who’s your wife again?” the old man barked. He’d been holding back out of consideration for Ginny, but now that she was asking for a divorce, there was no point sugarcoating anything. If he didn’t speak up now, this marriage really would be over.
After scolding Chandler, he turned to Ginny. “Has he done anything else to hurt you? Ginny, don’t be afraid. No matter what he did, Grandpa will take your side.”
Ginny was truly grateful for them. Without the old couple, she didn’t know how she would’ve survived the past five years.
But this time, she had made up her mind.
“Grandpa, I’ve disappointed you. But we’re still young. We’ve got a long road ahead. If we keep forcing this marriage, it’s not fair to either of us. This isn’t a rash decision. I’ve thought it through. Please, let us go our separate ways.”
Her tone was calm, resolute.
Grandfather knew Ginny well. She appeared soft, but there was a stubbornness in her bones. Once she decided on something, no
one could talk her out of it.

And he truly liked her. If he had a choice, he wouldn’t let this marriage fall apart.
As the old man lowered his head, searching for the right words to change her mind, Chandler spoke up. “I don’t agree to a divorce.”
Grandfather looked at him, expression unreadable. Ginny’s face darkened.
“Why not?”
“Ginny, I told you when we got married, my job doesn’t allow for impulsive decisions like marriage or divorce. And you agreed back then. Now you’re throwing a tantrum because you’re upset? Can you stop being so childish?”
Even now, he thought she was being childish?
Ginny almost laughed, a bitter, breathless kind of amusement.
Five years. He didn’t love her. He didn’t even understand her.
Now the woman he actually cared about was back. He could have divorced Ginny and gone to her. She had already stepped aside–why was he still clinging to her?
“You’re worried a divorce would affect your career?”

It was the only reason that made sense.

But still, she stood firm. “I don’t think your superiors would question your integrity just because of a divorce. I don’t think it would ruin your future.”
“Ginny, is that what you really think of me?” Chandler’s face hardened.
He had tried to reason with her, even apologized. And still, she misunderstood him.
His fists clenched tight.
Ginny’s face was no softer.
Seeing that he wasn’t giving in, something in her cracked. “Then what about me? What do you think I am? Last night, you humiliated me in front of my professor, my classmates—and now you think you have the right to criticize how I see you?
“And recently, the things you’ve done–do you really want me to lay it all out here, in front of your parents and your grandparents? Chandler, you don’t love me. Why won’t you just let me go?”
Her voice cracked. Eyes reddened.
She’d already accepted it–that he didn’t love her. But why couldn’t he let them end things with even a shred of dignity?

“Hmph. So all this is still about last night. Ginny, I never realized how petty you could be.”

They went back and forth, tension rising like a storm about to break.
The old man slammed the flower vase against the table–once, then again.
The room fell silent.
Then he shot Chandler a glare sharp enough to slice through
stone.
“Go to the study. Reflect on what you’ve done.”
Chandler hesitated, but after a warning glance from Grandfather, he turned and walked upstairs, reluctant and stiff.
“Ginny, come with me.”
