Chapter 39 Faked It
The next second, Melody collapsed forward.

Chandler rushed up, catching her just before she hit the ground.
“What did you say to her?” he demanded. “Ginny, haven’t I told you before? Her health isn’t good–she can’t take emotional stress. If anything happens to her, I’ll never forgive you.”
And with that, he lifted Melody into his arms and turned to leave.
Ginny stood frozen, watching his back disappear down the hallway. It hit her all at once–how absurd it all was. A man who just moments ago had begged her not to leave now scolded her for upsetting another woman and walked away without looking back.
Ginny… how many times does it take before you finally give up?
Enough. Stop clinging to the hope that someone who doesn’t care about you will one day change. It only leads to deeper wounds.
Her lips curled into a bitter smile. Then she turned around and walked calmly back into the bedroom. Quietly, efficiently, she packed her things and left to stay at the hospital dorm for the night.

“Doctor, please take a look at her–she has asthma. Could she have passed out from an attack?”
Chandler had run multiple red lights getting there, and now he was standing in the ER, breathless, cradling Melody in his arms. He found an empty bed, gently laid her down, and ran to get a doctor.
“She has asthma. Please check her.”
The doctor had come over expecting an emergency, but after a brief exam, his expression darkened. “Her vitals are completely normal. She’s just asleep.”
“That’s not possible.”
Chandler had seen her collapse with his own eyes. He’d witnessed her asthma attacks before–he knew what they looked like. He refused to believe this was nothing.
Convinced the doctor hadn’t checked thoroughly, he was about to drag him back when Melody slowly opened her eyes.
She hadn’t planned to wake up just yet, but she knew Chandler too well. If she waited any longer, he’d cause a scene in the ER, and her little performance would be exposed.
“Chandler… where are we?”
She blinked innocently, placing a hand on his arm to sit up,

“You fainted,” he said gently. “We’re at the hospital. Do you remember anything?”
A flicker of something passed through Melody’s eyes. Then, her expression turned soft and wounded. “Ginny said… that you care about her. That for her, you’re willing to cut me out of your life. Chandler, is that true?”
Something about the words didn’t sit right with him—he couldn’t quite picture Ginny saying that. But when he saw the sadness in Melody’s eyes, panic welled up. He couldn’t risk triggering her asthma again.
“That’s not true,” he said quickly. “You saved my life once. I’d never abandon you.”
Melody wasn’t exactly satisfied with his answer, but she didn’t show it. Instead, she leaned into him and hugged him tightly, her voice soft with gratitude.
“I knew it. I knew you’d never turn your back on me.”
Then her tone shifted, just enough to imply hurt without
sounding accusatory
“Ginny… she knows I’m well. She knows I care about you most. Yet she still said those things to provoke me.”

She pulled back, watching Chandler’s face carefully.

Seeing a flicker of frustration there, she added, “But I don’t think she meant it on purpose. And since I’m fine now, let’s just forget whatever happened, Chandler, promise me one thing, don’t get upset with her over this.”
Chandler looked at her–gentle, considerate, the complete opposite of Ginny lately–and a wave of restlessness rolled through him.
“Okay.”
His response was half–hearted, but he still asked if she felt unwell anywhere else.
Melody had no illness. Everything was just a performance to drag Chandler away from Ginny, and to use the incident to sow more resentment between them. But when she didn’t see the full disappointment in his eyes she was hoping for, she quickly shifted tactics.
“I’m still having trouble breathing,” she said, clutching her chest lightly. “But it’s late. If you don’t head back soon, Ginny might get upset. Maybe we should go.”
She pushed against the mattress, making a show of trying to stand. But as soon as her feet touched the ground, she gasped, wheezing loudly. Her face turned pale in an instant.

“There’s no way I’m letting you leave like this. Rest here. I’ll go get you admitted.”
As he hurried off, Melody’s eyes flickered with triumph.
Ginny, even if everything you said was true, it doesn’t matter. Chandler will always choose me. That’s enough.
After completing the admission paperwork, Chandler helped her settle into a hospital bed.
“Do you want me to call your family?” he asked.
She gave him a look like he was brushing her off. Her eyes reddened, lips trembling.
“I don’t want to worry them. If you have something else to do, you can go. The doctors and nurses are here. I’ll be fine.”
She said all the right words, but then pulled the blanket over her head, sulking quietly beneath it.
