Chapter 37 Wouldn’t Let Go
Lucky Draw
By one in the afternoon, Neil’s assistant had already completed the hospital admission paperwork.
Ginny had gone over his latest test results before he was even admitted.
He’d been relying on conservative treatment up until now, but the latest scans showed the lesions had clearly spread. Surgery was no longer optional–it had to happen, and soon.
“Thank you for trusting me, Neil,” she said quietly. “And please don’t worry. I will do everything I can to make sure you get better.”
Before clocking out that evening, Ginny stopped by Neil’s room. She went over the surgery schedule with his assistant and gave a rundown of what to watch out for that night.
Neil looked calm. Not even a trace of anxiety. It was the first time Ginny had seen such composure in someone about to undergo surgery.
People tend to cling to life as they grow older. Even a minor ache or cough is enough to spark worry and dread. Especially when it comes to surgery–both the patient and their family are usually tense and fearful.
But Neil…

He wasn’t worried.

And as far as she could tell, none of his family had shown up yet either.
“Neil, will your family be coming by soon?” she asked gently.
Surgical consent required a family signature.
Neil glanced at her, then nodded toward his assistant. “He is my family.”
What did that mean? He didn’t have any family?
Ginny was curious, but she didn’t pry. She was a professional. If a patient didn’t want to talk, she wouldn’t push.
The next morning at 8 a.m., the nurses wheeled Neil into the operating room. Ginny scrubbed in and began the procedure.
It wasn’t a particularly difficult surgery. The estimate was about seven and a half hours.
The team assisting her was made up of familiar faces–people she’d worked with many times. Their rhythm was smooth, their coordination tight. In the end, they finished half an hour ahead of schedule.
“Well done, Dr. Jenkins,” someone said. “Let’s grab something

By three in the afternoon, the standard lunch trays were long gone. But because of their demanding schedules, the hospital maintained a special kitchen window just for doctors coming out of surgery.
Whenever they showed up, no matter how late, the cooks would always prepare something.
Ginny wasn’t that hungry. She declined the offer to join her coworkers and headed back to her office instead.
She’d been up late the night before doing research.
And during the operation, her mind had been taut–completely focused. Now that it was over, the adrenaline faded, and the exhaustion hit her all at once.
She’d only just returned to work, and her caseload was still light. Rarely did she get to leave on time.
She called a cab and went home. All she wanted was a cup of milk and a nap.
But the moment she stepped through the door, she saw Chandler lying on the couch.
The room smelled faintly of alcohol. He’d clearly been drinking.

And in the middle of the day, no less.

He was usually too busy to even come home. The fact that he had time to drink… meant he must really have nothing better to do today.
“Where’ve you been?”
His voice was groggy as he stirred, lifting his head from the cushions.
Seeing the white coat in her hands, he blinked in surprise. “You went back to the hospital?”
Ginny said nothing. She walked past him, tossed the coat into the washing machine, hit the start button, shut the balcony door, and turned to head toward her room.
“Congrats,” he said behind her. “Back in Professor Edward’s lab and back at the hospital. That’s huge.”
He meant it.
A few days ago, Ginny had been wrongly accused. Her work, her future–all of it had been hanging by a thread. He remembered how devastated she’d been.
So now that she’d fought her way back and reclaimed what she’d lost, he assumed she’d be happy.

He followed her into the bedroom, wanting to talk.
But what he saw made his face fall.
She was packing.

“What are you doing?” he asked, voice low. “Don’t forget, we’re still married.”
Ginny looked at him, her face calm. “I’ve already given you the divorce papers. Once you sign them, we can get it finalized.”
Chandler hadn’t come home because he didn’t want to deal with this. If he hadn’t been drinking today, he wouldn’t have shown up at all. And sure enough, the moment he did, she brought it
- up.
He’d thought maybe–just maybe–since she was in a good mood today, she wouldn’t.
But Ginny’s voice was quiet, steady. “Wanting a divorce isn’t some impulsive decision I made today. I’ve thought about it for a long time. So no, it has nothing to do with my mood.”
She continued folding her clothes methodically.
Chandler stood there, watching her move, and something snapped. He stormed forward, reached out, and yanked the clothes out of her hands.

“What are you doing?” she asked, her voice sharper now.
“Even if I don’t pack today, I’ll have to pack tomorrow,” she said. “I’ve been accepted into Professor Edward’s lab. I have to go abroad. That’s not something anyone can change.”
Her eyes locked with his, unwavering. She wanted him to
understand.
But whatever reaction she was hoping for, she didn’t get it.
Chandler’s expression darkened even more.
He threw the clothes down, then in one swift motion, scooped her up and dropped her on the bed.
Before she could process what had happened, he was already on top of her.
“Chandler, what are you doing? Let me go!”
“No.“.
His grip clamped around her wrists, holding her in place. His eyes bore into hers, furious and wild.
“You came to me six years ago,” he said, his voice low, every
word gritted out through clenched teeth. “If you ever leave, that will be up to me.
