Chapter 16 Ginny Got Rescued

Melody flinched, startled. She quickly turned the phone over on her lap. “I was just watching some stupid viral video,’ she lied quickly. “Some shoplifter getting tackled. I guess it got my adrenaline up.”
“Catch that bitch! Make her wish she was never born!”
Jake had never met a woman as defiant as Ginny. Her escape lit a fire inside him, some primal urge to conquer.
He stripped off his jacket and rolled up his sleeves, charging forward to join the thugs in chasing her down.

Ginny had just dodged one of the men when she spotted Jake rushing in. Instinct kicked in-without hesitation,
she kicked him.
He wasn’t expecting it. Not in the slightest. The blow landed squarely between his legs.
Jake doubled over in pain, his face twisting into a deep, liver-colored grimace.
“You crazy bitch!” he growled. “Get her! Break her damn legs! Whoever catches her first gets a hundred thousand!”
With that kind of reward, the thugs were instantly reenergized.
Ginny was quickly cornered. She reached into her coat and pulled out a scalpel.
“Take one more step and I’ll use it!” she warned, her voice steady. “This is self-defense. Even if I hurt someone, I won’t go to jail. But you? If I hit an artery or something important, you might not walk again.”
As she said it, she glanced pointedly at Jake’s crotch.
His face turned a darker shade. “You
bitch. I don’t believe you’d dare kill someone. Get her! All of you! What, you
scared of one woman?”
They moved in again. Ginny swung the scalpel. One of the men wasn’t fast

enough-he caught the blade across his
hand. Blood poured out from a wide gash.
They hadn’t expected her to actually fight back like that. For a moment, none of
them moved.
“Useless cowards!” Jake spat. He bent to pick up a metal rod off the ground and stepped toward her. “So you’ve got some fight in you, huh? Let’s see what wins- your little knife or this iron bar.”
Ginny swallowed hard. The scalpel was sharp, but against a metal rod? It wasn’t much of a match.
Suddenly, screeching brakes echoed from outside.

“Mr. Wheeler, some people are here!” one of the thugs keeping watch yelled, panicked. “A bunch of cars just pulled up! If they’ve got cops with them, we’re screwed!”
Jake gritted his teeth. The last thing he needed was the Wheeler family’s name splashed all over the morning news. As much as he hated to let it go, he tossed
the rod aside and motioned for the others
to run out the back.
When Ryan stormed in with his team, the warehouse was empty-except for Ginny.
“I’m here,” she called out weakly.
He rushed to her, helping her up, eyes scanning for injuries.

When he saw the swelling on her cheek, his face hardened.
He scooped her into his arms without another word, carrying her toward the exit. “Find them,” he ordered his men.
But Ginny tugged at his jacket and shook her head.

“Don’t bother. They’re gone.”
They’d chosen a warehouse with a back door. That much was clear. This had been
planned carefully, escape route and all.
They wouldn’t catch anyone.
Ryan understood. He called his men off.
“I’ll take you to the hospital first.”
She was exhausted. Once he placed her gently in the car, she drifted off to sleep almost instantly.
He held an ice pack to her face, eyes fixed on her bruises, then turned to his
assistant.
“Cancel the signing with Wheeler Group
tomorrow.’
“But Mr. Winchester,” the assistant hesitated, “our strategy team’s been
working on that contract for over half a year. If we back out now, the shareholders won’t be happy.”
He looked uneasy. Carl Reynolds had already been eyeing Ryan’s position lately, making trouble wherever he could. If this deal got dropped for no stated reason, Carl would surely seize the chance to stir things up.
