Chapter 5 Not Much of a Doctor, Huh?

Ginny was shaking. Tears spilled uncontrollably down her cheeks as a dull, wrenching pain twisted her insides into

knots.

She’d been kidnapped because of him. Beaten until she lost the baby.

And him? He was in a rush to wrap

himself in another woman’s arms.

What a piece of work you are, Chandler.

Ginny didn’t even have the strength to cry anymore. Her eyes stared blankly at the ceiling, empty and dry.

It was a long time before she raised a cold hand to wipe the tears from her face.

She had to pull herself together.

If Chandler could be that heartless, what

was the point of wasting another tear on someone like him?

She needed to divorce him soon.

Over the next few days, he didn’t visit the hospital once. Ginny forced herself not to think about him, cooperating fully with

the doctors.

A week passed. Her color returned, and her vitals steadily improved.

That morning, just after breakfast, her

phone rang. It was the hospital director.

“Hello? Ginny, how’s your recovery

coming along?”

“Much better, Sir.”

LLU

His voice faltered awkwardly. “Well… the thing is, we’ve just had a major client walk into the hospital. He specifically requested you as the attending physician. The Dean’s entertaining him now. Do you think you could come in?”

He hesitated, then added, “But if you’re not feeling up to it, that’s completely fine. I mean, sure, this client could have an impact on future investments, but your

health comes first.”

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

Emotional blackmail. No question.

She let out a bitter, quiet laugh. “Sure, Director. I’ll go ahead and check myself

out.”

A spark of joy lit up his voice. “Wonderful! Ginny, no wonder you’ve been our top employee three years in a row. I’ll make sure the whole staff learns from your example-such selflessness, such vision!”

Ginny ended the call with a few polite words and immediately sent Ryan a message before heading off to check herself out.

She returned to the hospital where she

worked and pushed open the door to the

Dean’s office.

A young man was seated on the sofa.

He wore a crisp black dress shirt, buttoned all the way to the top. He looked every bit the picture of a polished professional.

Ginny was sure she’d never seen him before.

“So you’re Ginny Jenkins?” he asked with a mocking smirk. “Doesn’t seem like your medical skills are anything special.”

The Dean’s aging face twitched with embarrassment, and he quickly forced a laugh to smooth things over. “Ginny, this

is Attorney Kevin Wheeler. He’s here representing Wheeler Group for an inspection.”

Ginny’s expression darkened. “Nice to

meet you, Mr. Wheeler.”

Who greets someone by tearing them down? What, money makes you king now?

The Dean adjusted his glasses. “How about this-Dr. Jenkins can show you

around our facilities. Would that be

alright?”

Kevin gave a soft snort and stood up with practiced elegance, brushing off his cuffs like she might’ve dirtied them.

“Sure. I’ll let Dr. Jenkins show me the

place.”

Ginny took a steady breath and led him

out of the office.

She walked him through the hospital from south to north: equipment rooms, pharmacy, treatment areas, injection stations-carefully and thoroughly explaining everything.

“We’re the city’s only comprehensive medical institution that combines

treatment, emergency response, research, teaching, prevention, wellness, rehabilitation, and elderly care. We meet nearly all of the city’s healthcare needs.”

They stopped near a stairwell next to a photo wall labeled “Our Medical Team.”

“All of these are our department heads. Each one has at least a master’s degree

and holds full board certifications. And-”

“You?” he interrupted. “A master’s degree?”

He didn’t even glance at the others, just stared at her nameplate. “Your alma mater isn’t exactly impressive.”

Her smile froze.

He’d been grilling her with all sorts of questions the whole tour, and she’d answered each one with patience.

After all, he was Wheeler Group’s

representative. She had to serve him well.

She drew in a breath, voice cool. “Mr.

Wheeler, if I’m not mistaken, this is the first time we’ve met. Why the hostility? Or do you just dislike the look of me? If that’s the case, I can have someone else give you the tour.”

His gaze slid lazily over her. He laughed cruelly.

“Can’t handle a little heat? No skills, no connections, and that trash attitude—yet you really think you can compete with my sister for a man?”

Ginny’s chest went still.

His sister?

Kevin Wheeler… Melody Wheeler.

Of course.

With the connection laid bare, whatever faint respect she had left for him vanished completely.

“Compete? Please. Your precious sister’s the one who inserted herself into my marriage. And you’re a lawyer? Don’t you even know what a mistress is?”

Kevin was stunned into silence. His jaw tightened, teeth clenched.

“Sharp-tongued, huh?! My sister and Chandler dated in college! You seduced him while she was overseas!”

“They broke up. Chandler and I are married. She’s the one interfering. Or are you just too blind to tell the difference? And you call yourself a lawyer?”

Ginny had been holding back her anger for days, and Kevin had walked right into

the fire.

His face darkened, lips twisting with rage.

He jabbed a finger at her, voice gritted out from between his teeth.

“Fine. If this is your attitude, don’t blame me. Because of you, the investment is off.”
