Chapter 2 The Baby’s Gone
Right before the world went dark, she caught the distant wail of sirens-faint at first, then louder, closing in.
Beep. Beep. Beep.
When consciousness returned, the first thing Ginny heard was the cold rhythm of hospital monitors.
She forced her heavy eyelids open and shifted her gaze slightly.
Sitting upright in the chair was Chandler Pierce.
Under his sharp brows, his eyes were deep and unreadable. A tall, rigid nose, lips thin and sculpted like blades—he didn’t need to say a word to radiate intimidation. The air around him was cold, edged with danger.
Her voice trembled. “Chandler… the baby, is our baby okay?”
She asked carefully, her voice barely above a whisper, afraid of the answer but desperate for it.
Chandler pressed his lips together. “The baby’s gone.”
Her mind went blank. A low buzz roared in her ears.
“What… what did you say?”

Seeing her expression begin to fall apart, he actually offered something close to comfort. “We couldn’t save the baby. Don’t be too sad. You’re still alive. That’s what matters.”
He paused, then added in an emotionless tone, “Besides, that child shouldn’t have come in the first place.”
Something inside Ginny cracked. It tore slowly, relentlessly, through her mind.
A single tear slipped down her cheek without warning. Her lips parted, shaking, but when she tried to speak, no sound came
out.
The baby. Her baby… was gone.
How… how could this happen?
Fingers twisting in the bedsheet beneath her, Ginny broke down, sobbing uncontrollably. All the pain, the exhaustion, the silent grief she had carried for so long-it all collapsed at once.

She had just begun to feel that tiny life inside her. And now it
was gone.
Chandler watched her fall apart, and for some reason, his chest felt strangely heavy. He pulled a tissue from the box beside him and changed the subject.
“The guys who kidnapped you got away. But they won’t get far.

He brushed past the mention of the baby. As if it didn’t matter. As if none of it really
mattered.

But if he hadn’t hung up that call… if he had just answered her cry for help-none of this would’ve happened.
Suddenly, Ginny lunged forward and grabbed the front of his shirt. Her eyes were bloodshot.
“Chandler, why didn’t you come save me? Why?! That was our baby. Our baby…”
Her voice was hoarse, her face pale and streaked with tears.

And for reasons he couldn’t quite name, his chest-already heavy-tightened even
more.
The silence stretched.
Then, uncharacteristically, he said, “It’s not what you think. There’s nothing going on between me and Melody.”
His jaw clenched slightly before he rose, broad shoulders stiff beneath his uniform.
“You’re too emotional right now. We’ll talk when you’ve calmed down. Focus on recovering.” He walked to the door, his strides neat and straight.
He paused at the threshold.
“And… I don’t agree to a divorce.’

The room fell silent.
Ginny’s trembling hand reached for her lower abdomen. Her heart ached like it was being sliced open.

cheeks.
Seeing she was awake, Ryan finally exhaled, the tension in his body easing slightly.
“Are you in pain? Is everything okay? Why are you here alone?”
Three questions in a row-he rushed to her side, fists clenching when he saw how weak and sickly she looked.
“Where’s Chandler?”
Ginny’s eyes dulled. She answered automatically, “He came by. Just left. Said he had to return to the Special Ops Unit.”
Ryan’s expression darkened.
“You insisted on being with him back then. And these two years? He’s left you all alone. What have you gotten from this marriage besides a name on paper? And now, even your safety’s compromised. If you hadn’t been alert, who knows what would’ve happened today?”
The more he thought about it, the more furious he became. Rarely did he lose his temper-but this time, his face was grim as he gave her his final word.
“You really need to think about whether this marriage is worth anything anymore.”
