The classmate had just been making polite remarks.
But when Tiffany dropped that bombshell, he looked pretty awkward.
“Sorry, I had no idea you two were…”
The private room gradually fell silent
Tears suddenly rolled down Tiffany’s cheeks.
Her expression was bitter. “It’s my fault for being such a bad judge of character. I married the wrong guy–can’t blame anyone else.”
A female classmate handed her some tissues.
Tiffany started telling her story in bits and pieces.
The usual tale–cheating husband, all the family assets controlled by his parents, and his mistress was so bold in her provocations that the stress made Tiffany miscarry on the spot.
A beautiful woman in tears is always heartbreaking.
Our old classmates were all getting fired up:
“What a scumbag! Why stick around with him? Just dump his ass!”
‘Seriously, our campus queen has the looks and the brains–why put up with this crap?”
‘Divorce today, find a younger guy tomorrow. Life’s short–enjoy every day of it!”
Immediately, someone took the opportunity to bring up me and Samuel:
‘Aren’t the Carters running a law firm? We’ve got our star lawyer right here-what’s to be afraid of? Not only should you divorce him, you should take those rich assholes for everything they’re worth!”
Tiffany’s eyes lit up, and she gradually stopped sobbing.
turned to look at Samuel too.
Samuel’s expression remained calm, though his grip on my hand tightened slightly.
He said quietly: “My wife handles divorce cases primarily. You can consult with her if you need help.”
The atmosphere grew a bit tense.
Tiffany bit her lip and looked at me for a long moment before speaking softly:
‘Mrs. Carter, I’ve heard so much about you. Would you be willing to help me out with this?”
I sighed inwardly.
Her situation was actually quite clear–cut and typical.
Chapter 2
Rich kids might fall head over heels in love, but their parents usually keep their wits about them.
Many wealthy families operate this way nowadays.
They’ll let a woman marry in and live the high life, but they can just as easily throw her out with nothing.
All procedures perfectly legal and airtight–no loopholes whatsoever.
I chose my words carefully, trying to give her the most objective analysis of her situation:
“…Legally speaking, there’s virtually no marital property that can be divided.”
“Even though he’s the one at fault.”
Tiffany’s mouth fell open in shock.
I pointed to the rare leather Hermes bag on her seat
“Perhaps you could try to get more expensive gifts from him.”
“Items like jewelry, clothing, and luxury goods usually aren’t part of property division in divorce–they typically default to the
woman.”
Tiffany’s expression suddenly changed.
She stared at me with cold eyes:
“So what you’re saying, Mrs. Carter, is that all my years of youth and devotion will only amount to a few handbags?”
I was surprised that her first concern wasn’t about asset division, but about her wasted youth and emotional investment. Still, I
nodded.
“Pre–marital legal planning by wealthy families is standard practice in asset protection.”
Some female classmates muttered curses about the scumbag, while others quietly expressed sympathy for Tiffany.
Tiffany ignored me and turned her gaze to Samuel instead:
“Mr. Carter, do you see it the same way?”
Samuel froze, his grip on my hand tightening even more.
It took considerable effort for me to pull my hand free.
Given Samuel’s professional experience, he understood this situation even better than I did.
Sure enough, he remained silent.
Seeing this, Tiffany let out several cold laughs.
Then she grabbed her bag and stood up abruptly:
“I may not be as successful as Mrs. Carter, but I’m not pathetic enough to trade years of love for a few bags.”
“Mrs. Carter, may I ask you–now that you’re advising me to trade my feelings for handbags, what’s next?”
