Chapter 20
She clenched her manicured nails into her palm hard enough to draw blood.
She was shaking with rage.
Sidney stood still at the door, expression blank, though inwardly he was sighing hard. ‘Leave, you lunatic. One more minute and Mr. Rangel’s sending you to an overseas post in the middle of nowhere!‘
From a distance, Phoebe had seen the whole thing. Without a sound, she slipped back into her room.
Back in the suite, only Estela and Spencer remained.
As she remembered how cold he’d been earlier, Estela’s nerves were on edge.
“I’m sorry,” she said quietly. “I didn’t mean to disturb your rest.”
Spencer sat lazily on the sofa, looking relaxed.
Estela caught herself. Remembering how Elise had addressed him, she quickly corrected, “Mr. Rangel, thank you for what you did. I didn’t know what you might need, so I brought some soup and snacks to help with recovery.”
She opened the lunchbox, carefully arranging the soup and the homemade pastries on the table.
“It was nothing. No need for the fuss, Ms. Warren,” Spencer

replied coolly. He didn’t touch the food, but he didn’t reject it. either.
Estela’s gaze fell on the gauze wrapped around his hand and arm. Guilt prickled at her.
‘He probably doesn’t even have the strength to hold a spoon. That stab must’ve hurt like hell,‘ she thought.
She made up her mind.
When Sidney returned, he froze at the doorway. Estela was holding out a steaming bowl of soup to Spencer.
His heart dropped. ‘Oh no. No, no, no!‘
He didn’t even get a chance to shut the door in time.
‘This is about to go very badly,‘ he thought.
Spencer was a known picky eater, had a sensitive stomach, a private nutritionist–and he hated soup.
On top of that, he had severe germophobia. There was no way he’d eat anything homemade by a stranger.
And to make matters worse, he’d just eaten thirty minutes
ago.
Estela had just hit every one of his known landmines.
Sidney stood still, lips sealed, pretending to be invisible. He didn’t dare imagine what was about to happen to Estela.
Estela gently placed the bowl and ceramic spoon in front of Spencer. When he didn’t move, the guilt weighed event heavier on her chest.

‘He must’ve been in too much pain to even lift the spoon,‘ she thought.
She scooped up a spoonful, blew it gently to cool it down, and offered it to his lips herself.
Sidney held his breath. ‘It’s over. She’s done for.‘
“Not bad. Thanks.”
Spencer took the spoonful with perfect ease and calm.
Then, with a slight tilt of his chin, he motioned to her-“More.”
Estela didn’t think anything of it. To her, everything seemed perfectly normal.
Sidney thought, ‘Excuse me?‘
His pupils shrank in disbelief.
‘Is this real life? Has Mars crashed into Earth? Does a black hole just get patched up by an asteroid?’
‘Mr. Rangel. is calmly drinking soup–the thing he hates most
in the world?‘
As a well–trained and composed assistant, Sidney had always kept his cool. But in that moment, his curiosity was exploding.
Spencer shot him a look. “Sidney, do you not have work to do?”
Sidney gave a professional smile. “Ah, right. Just remembered there’s an urgent file back at the office that needs your signature. I’ll leave you to it, sir.”

Without missing a beat, he turned and walked out like his life depended on it.
‘Cleveland lined up every imaginable type of marriage
candidate for Spencer–except the ‘married woman‘ type. Who would’ve thought?‘
‘Spencer has lived like a monk for years, and now? The second he gets interested in someone, it’s already this intense?‘ he wondered.
With perfect 20/20 vision, Sidney had clearly seen it–when Estela fed him that spoonful of soup, Spencer’s gaze was practically smoldering.
Suddenly, everything made sense.
This was the same man who’d once taken a bullet through the shoulder and still refused to go to the hospital. But this time, for a minor stab wound, he voluntarily checked in, asked the doctor to wrap it up in dramatic layers of gauze, and stayed here for days.
That injury had scabbed over the very first night. And he still hadn’t left.
‘Wonder what Cleveland would think if he knew… Sidney was honestly starting to look forward to the fallout.
‘Turns out, love among the rich really is just as over–the–top as the novels make it seem.’

Inside the suite, Estela quietly fed Spencer spoon by spoon.
When the last bit was gone, he glanced at the empty bowl,

sounding a little disappointed. “That’s it?”
Estela paused for a second, surprised.

The soup was medicinal. It wasn’t rich or savory–in fact, it had a slightly bitter aftertaste. It definitely wasn’t what you’d call delicious.
