Chapter 41
Hayden had had enough of the nasty insults and was about to step in to defend Yasmine when she suddenly looked up at him and shook her head, Ha stared back, his eyes filled with urgency.
But then, Yasmine threw the glass down. It had been full of her potion, and the reddish liquid splattered everywhere as the glass shattered.
A few hot drops splashed onto Mandy’s pants, and she hissed in pain.
But Yasmine’s face was blank as she kicked the shards of glass toward Mandy’s bare ankles. The sharp edges sliced into her skin, drawing blood.
“Are you out of your mind?” Mandy shouted, fury in her eyes.
“My mind?” Yasmine’s voice was flat. “Keep barking at me like that, and you’ll find out exactly what I’m capable of.”
Mandy’s face turned red with rage, but before she could get another word out, Yasmine cut her off. “I’ve been holding back because I respect my elders. But if you’re going to act like this, I’ll show you what happens.”
“Yasmine! How dare you speak to me like this!” Mandy’s whole body trembled with anger. She couldn’t believe she was being talked down to by someone from an orphanage.
But Yasmine just snapped her fingers. Two burly bodyguards appeared at her side. Without even turning around, Yasmine pointed at Mandy. “Get her out of here.”
The bodyguards moved quickly, their actions rough. Yasmine turned, hearing a thud as Mandy hit the ground. And then there were her screams–sharp and shrill. Yasmine winced and stuck a finger in her ear. The noise died down almost instantly.
“Yasmine!” Hayden bounded down the stairs and enveloped Yasmine in a fierce hug. “You spent three years with such a family? You’re something else, putting up with that crap for so long.”
Yasmine nestled her face into his shoulder, feeling a lump rise in her throat. She’d been such a fool, swallowing her pride for three whole years. It was beyond pathetic.
Hayden felt her shudder and his gaze turned steely as he stared out the window. The Zimmerman family had some nerve pulling this stunt.
“Yasmine, trust me. They’re not getting away with this,” he comforted and promised.
After a few moments, Yasmine pulled back, her eyes steady again. Instead of replying, she glanced at the broken glass on the floor and whispered, almost to herself, “But Mom specially got it for me.”
The potion was supposed to help her heal after the miscarriage, but Yasmine knew now that no amount of fancy herbs could fix the mess people made of each other’s lives.
Hayden hugged her close again. “Hey, I’ll get you more. Whatever you need, whatever makes you feel better. Just say the word.”
Outside the villa, Mandy struggled to her feet, just in time to see the embrace. The pain from her fall faded in an instant–especially when she saw who it was. Her eyes widened in disbelief as she recognized Hayden. ‘Yasmine and Hayden? Together?‘ Her mind reeled.
In a daze, Mandy stumbled back to the Zimmerman residence, barely aware of how she got there.
Only when Sebastian burst through the door and called out to hor did cho enan haal.
