Chapter 37

Thankfully, Julia didn’t turn up again for the rest of the week but neither did Aiden. Even Kyle didnknow what Aiden was up to and Tammy hadn’t stopped by or even answered any of my messages

Maybe they’ve gone away or something.Kyle suggested as he walked me home from work that Saturday

Maybe.I replied distractedly, trying to ignore the jealousy that bloomed within me like a raging inferno. (

I had been telling myself all week that I was glad Aiden wasn’t around but I couldn’t ignore the stinging bitterness that I felt when I thought of how Aiden was most likely off with Tammy acting like a normal couple when not all that long ago, his tongue was down my throat. I guess I felt foolish for giving away my first kiss to him so easily but despite the cold bitterness and jealousy that bothered me every time I thought about Tammy and Aiden together, I also knew that this was for

the best. Aiden and I just weren’t meant to be

Kyle ended up staying over for the rest of the week, only going back to his foster parents to grab some things. He hadn’t been in the greatest mood when he went but when he came back it was obvious that he was in an even worse mood. It was difficult not to bring up the subject but I didn’t want to stress Kyle out anymore so we did what any normal teenager does when they don’t want to face difficult decisions; we watched movies and played video games

By Monday Kyle seemed to be in a better mood but he also admitted that he should probably head back to his foster parents to face the music. I could tell he was still hesitant so I offered to go with him but he insisted he’d be okay

At least message me to let me know how things go.I sighed as we left school and started the walk

back home

I will.Kyle smiled mirthlessly and shifted his backpack on his shoulders. Are you going to be okay

on your own?”

Yeah. I’m used to it.I smiled. I’ll just do my homework and have an early night or something.”

That’s our Els,Kyle chuckled and shook his head. Always being good and doing her homework.”

Yeah, you should try it some time.I teased

We parted ways when we were only a couple of blocks from my house. The temperature was dropping like a stone and I was already dreaming of curling up under my covers and spending the rest of my evening watching something on netflix once my homework was done. I had already guessed Aiden wouldn’t be in and when I saw that the drive was empty, I knew my hunch was right. He hadn’t been home at all which I found myself disappointed by but reminded myself that this was

1/2

for the best and also, I didn’t need to know where Aiden was. His business wasn’t my business an he owed me nothing

The phone was ringing when I finally got in and for a moment I looked around confused by the sound. Liam insisted on having a landline still even though I probably hadn’t used it in two years. had actually forgotten it existed so was naturally surprised to find it ringing and that someone had the number. Dumping my bag by the door as I shut it, I followed the sound into the living room, lifting the cordless handset off of it’s cradle and trying to ignore the best gathered on the back of it

Hello?”

Hi Ellie, it’s me.Julia’s voice greeted me in a tone somewhere between tense and false politeness

Oh.I murmured, my good mood dampening

Could we talk? Face to face maybe?Julia asked, choosing to ignore my annoyance. I could come around again and we could have dinner/”

No.I asked quickly, my cheeks flaming when I realised how rude that sounded. Sure I wasn’t happy to be hearing from my mother but I didn’t mean to be so dismissive. I mean, We can meet just not

here.”

Oh, okayJulia replied sounding disappointed but I chose to ignore it. Well we could meet somewhere. You name the place and I’ll be there.”

I think that he has seen her picture on her brothers Phone and fallen for her, that is why he asked to move in
