Chapter 1
My wedding day ended in a crash. He died saving me. His dying wish?
“Raise my brother for three years.”
Burying my grief, I became his brother’s devoted personal assistant, giving him everything.
His reward? A public sneer: “My almost-sister-in-law, now scheming to get into my bed? A desperate, gold-digging slut – I wouldn’t touch her if she begged!”
Outside the door, I clutched my phone. The screen glared coldly.
DAY 1.
Tomorrow, freedom.
The mocking laughter from the private room continued.
“Oh come on, President Scott, you can’t say that.”
“Exactly! Violena’s gorgeous and capable. All these years, she’s been handling business deals for the Scott family abroad and taking such good care of you at home. We’re all jealous.”
“That’s right! No matter how you talk to her or scold her… President Scott, she never leaves your side. That kind of devotion… I’d say it runs way deeper than what she felt for your brother back then.”
Standing outside the door, I felt my eyes sting with tears.
Yes, compared to all the hurt I endured from Damien Scott, his brother Delcher Scott had given me the most beautiful love in the world.
Delcher was my first love. We met and fell for each other freshman year, and after seven years together, we chose to get married.
For seven years, Delcher held me in the palm of his hand, giving me everything he had.
He never let me suffer even the slightest grievance. Even in that split second before the crash, his instinct was to shield me completely, absorbing all the impact o protect me.
And with his dying breath, he entrusted Damien to me. I knew exactly what he meant-he wasn’t asking me to be Damien’s babysitter.
He knew that without him, I wouldn’t want to live. He was simply giving me a reason to keep going.
So for these three years, no matter how terribly Damien treated me or how many times he blamed me for his brother’s death, I followed Delcher’s final wish and did everything in my power to protect his only remaining family.
Today marked the second-to-last day of the three-year promise I made to Delcher.
just had to endure one more day, and then I could see my beloved again.
At that thought, a tender sweetness bloomed in my chest.
took a deep breath, pushed open the door, and walked in.
The moment I entered, all eyes turned to me-some mocking, some sneering.
I ignored their stares and walked straight to Damien’s side.
“You have a sensitive stomach. You should drink less.”
Rosy, the woman beside Damien, let out a cold laugh and handed me her glass.
“Since you’re so worried about Damien’s health, Violena, why don’t you drink this for him?”
I took the glass from Rosy and drained it in one gulp.
Chapter 1
Seeing my decisive action, a flash of annoyance crossed Damien’s eyes.
But moments later, he curled his lips into a contemptuous smile.
“Oh? Looks like you can really hold your liquor. In that case, drink all of these.”
Damien snapped his fingers. The waiter standing nearby placed all the empty glasses and bottles on the table in front of me.
A rough count showed nearly dozens of glasses.
I straightened my spine without saying a word.
Damien glanced at me sideways and let out a cold laugh.
“What? Scared now? Violena, you know what disgusts me most about you?”
“You’ve been clinging to me pathetically for years, and now you want to put on this holier-than-thou act. Did my brother actually like this fake, pretentious side of you?”
“Didn’t you say I had a bad stomach and that you’d take the drinks for me? What’s wrong? Can’t handle it now? Then what was that little performance just
now-”
As Damien spoke, he reached for another glass.
I snatched it away and brought it to my lips.
Beer, wine, whiskey, vodka-I drank glass after glass.
By the end, my vision was so blurred I couldn’t see the glass in front of me, but I kept mechanically repeating the motion of bringing alcohol to my mouth.
I don’t know how much time passed before someone yanked the glass from my hand and Damien shot to his feet.
“Stop putting on this pathetic show! It’s disgusting!”
“You’ve ruined the whole mood! Come on, let’s get out of here!”
